Airpods Charging Case Sounds/Wrong Account

Like many others, I cannot get the charging case sounds to turn off with my airpods. The function is grayed out. I have gone through all the suggestions I've found so far. Re-setting, unpairing and re-pairing. Charging cable attached and not. Nothing works. Every time I touch the airpods, that beeping sound starts. It's maddening.

I've logged back into my icloud, checked the findmy and don't even see the airpods associated with my account. I say logged back into icloud, because I'm slowly cutting myself away from apple. It's unfortunately a slow process with how entangled everything is.

I don't know what else to do at this point. When the airpods are re-paired, they say they are associated with an older email that I haven't used to log into my apple accounts for over a year. These airpods were purchased maybe two months ago. So I'm at a loss as to how they associated with the old account, and not the one that I am currently logged in through. To make things even more entertaining, I attempted to log in using the old email and apple tells me that id doesn't exist. So here I am with airpods associated with an account that apple says doesn't exist, that I can't change.
