Sidecar Resolution on iPad still an issue

Changing the resolution of the display while mirroring (rather than extending) does not work either. If I "Optimise for 10.5 inch iPad Pro" and select "Mirror" then the full iPad screen is utilised and my MacBook screen is resized to have the same aspect ratio as the iPad. However, I want to use the iPad as an extended screen, and when I select this it reverts back to the same problem described above.

I am reluctant to purchase an application to do this as it seems to be something that Apple are wanting to provide natively.

Are there are any solutions for this problem?
