Update mojave 10.14.6 operating system on Macbook Air

I have a 2019 Macbook Air with 121 GB storage. Though I have automatic updates turned on, the operating system hasn't updated for a long while and is stuck on Mojave 10.14.6. Several applications I have purchased recently will not open on this system and require an upgraded one. When I try to force an upgrade it gives me OS Monterey, but says it "can't be installed on MacIntosh HD". Possibly there is insufficient storage - I have 36.7GB free, and almost all of the rest is either "system" or a relatively small set of needed applications. What to do?

You can upgrade a 2019 MacBook Air all the way to Sonoma - the current version of macOS. You will not be able to upgrade it to Sequoia when Sequoia comes out later this year.

macOS Sonoma is compatible with these computers - Apple Support

If you upgrade to Catalina or later, 32-bit applications will break, and iTunes will go away, replaced by separate applications.

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

You will need to make enough space to download and install the upgrade, whether that means offloading some files to an external drive, or deleting unneeded documents outright.
