Why is the audio deleting after it was 'detached' from the video in Final Cut Pro?

Why is the audio deleting after it was 'detached' from the video, when after selecting the video (only) to delete? I only want to audio from the video, and then to put it wherever, whenever I want.

Do you understand the basic concept of the application? Everything in the project is linked to something on the primary storyline. When you delete the video you also delete whatever is connected to it, in this case the detached audio. If you want to the delete the video and leave the audio use Shift-Delete or the forward delete key on an extended keyboard. This will replace the video with a gap clip to which the audio remains connected.

I forgot to add: if you know, ahead of time, that you only want the audio, you can do so and thus avoid detaching it and deleting the video.

Edit->Source Media->Audio Only (or press Shift-3); drag the clip to timeline (only the audio is added); then do Edit->Source Media->All (or Shift-1) to return to the default setting of using both video and audio of clips.
