My MacBook Air running Sonoma 14.6.1 keeps giving me the following error message that forces me to quit Mail:
"Mail cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn’t enough space in your home folder."
I've run malware app and deleted files it could not open. But it keeps happening --- not all of the time,l but enough to be pretty annoying. Does anyone have an idea about how to fix this?

The goal should be to have at least 20% free space which in your situation would be about 24GB free. You need to remove apps and data that is taking up the space. Move data to an external drive.
System data includes the MacOS and included apps. These can not be removed and are required to operate the computer. You have the smallest drive offered so the percentage of the drive used by the system is high.

How much free space do you have?

Well I am not sure whether optimizing is the issue. I already seem to be doing most of what is recommended to optimize storage. Why should system data consume so much storage?
