Apple ID does not work in iTunes

I can view my Apple ID profile on the My Apple ID web page, and can change the password, but I cannot get my Apple ID to work in iTunes.

I bought a song earlier tonight. That worked fine, but since then, when I try to access the iTunes store, iTunes thinks about it for about 2 minutes, then either says that my Apple ID or password is incorrect, or it says that the network got reset.

I went to another computer in the household, and I got the same results.

As far as I can tell on the My Apple ID web site, my account is valid and in good standing.

Why does it not work in iTunes?

When I look for software updates for iTunes, it says that 9.1.1 (the one I have) is the latest. Maybe so for PowerPC macs running 10.4, but my late 2009 iMac running 10.6.4 has iTunes 9.2.1(5).

I'm seeing the same thing for the past couple of hours. Actually, most connection attempts time out and probably one in ten connect enough to get a "bad password" error or, at best, load a basic page in the store (but never works long enough to complete an actual purchase). Seems like there's some general issue with the store right now, I'm guessing it'll be fixed in another few hours...
