What does "Card Not Present" mean in Apple Pay?

Every time I use Apple Pay (new to this), I get notification that my card was "not present" for that purchase/vendor. What does this mean? Seems like a problem with transaction.

You’re using your iPhone to do Tap-To-Pay (Apple Pay) or is it an online transaction?
