Copy/Paste broken in Notes and emptied notes are not places in recently deleted!

Sometimes when I copy or cut content from a note it will not paste correctly - it pastes a smaller amount of the wrong text.

This is a massive problem if I cut the whole content of a note because that note is deleted (and not placed in recently deleted) and then the content is not pastable. It results in lost and unrecoverable notes and cant be undone.

I've lost several notes like this and it's very worrying that I might lose really important notes as a result.

I'm on Ventura with Macbook pro M1.

I have experienced similar problems many times with Apple Notes. Specifically copy & paste between Notes will suddenly stop working. Typically the paste action will paste in text from a previous copy — suggesting that it is the copy action that has stopped working.

  • This buggy behavior has happened for me on multiple Macs, including both personal machines and my corporate-controlled laptop.
  • Quitting & restarting Notes resolves the problem — but only temporarily, because it inevitably happens again.
  • It only affects Notes for me. If I switch to another application copy/paste works as expected there, but back in Notes the copy/paste is broken until quit/restart.
  • This was happening so often for me, and often at frustratingly importune moments, that I abandoned Notes for another note-taking app earlier this year.
  • The fact that most Notes users don’t seem to experience this makes me wonder if something about the way I use Notes was triggering the behavior. One possibility that occurred is that I usually have multiple active Notes open in their own window, alongside the main Notes window — and so my copy/paste is happening between these Notes windows. As opposed to someone who switches between two Notes in the Notes sidebar as an intermediate step when doing copy/paste.

Anyway, I just wanted to add my $.02 here to support @tommytastic that this is a real bug of some sort. And to counterbalance the unhelpful “I’ve never seen this behavior” replies that one often gets in these forums. To my knowledge there is no way to reliably report such bugs to Apple without having a Developer account. I’ve reported this buggy behavior through Apple’s support portal multiples times over recent years, but that is a one-way black hole of correspondence.

P.S. just saw this other thread that describes the same buggy behavior: Notes App copy/paste fails on mint 2023 M… - Apple Community

Yeah - the problem is I just do it instinctively - I either need to try to get out of the habit or move to another tool.

The pasting issue seems to be worse when pasting into the internal note window, if I double click to open the note in a fresh window I think was more reliable.

Definitely starting to considering other tools though. Notes is very basic and now becoming unreliable. About the only good thing is that it's fast and syncs well.

I think you missed the part in my post were I said that, since I had never seen it, I didn't know why it was happening. And your missing the larger point. People saying they haven't seen the issue doesn't mean they are saying, "I don't have this issue so you must be making it up." It is simpy more data. If very few people are seeing something it can mean that it is not, in fact a bug in iOS but something else. Or if could mean that it is a bug that almost no one is seeing. In either case, it means that troubleshooting it or getting it resolved by Apple is going to be very difficult.

We see way too many people here refusing to troubleshoot because "It's a bug! I shouldn't have to do anything! Apple had to fix it." And that's not always a productive avenue.
