If you purchased the Gift Card at a retail location where they are displayed on a rack accessible for anyone to tamper with them, don't do that. Some store fail to secure the product their customers purchase even though they will lock up products that thieves can steal from them. It is a common scam that retailers are aware of. I would go back to that store with your receipt, since they have allowed the scammers to tamper with the card. It may require management or more than likely corporate contact, but if they value you as a customer, they will give you a refund.

In the future, only purchase from a location that secures their Gift Cards or go to apple.com where they can also be gifted to others. There is not much Apple can do, since they cannot tell the retailers how to display the cards. Many locations that do not have a plan to secure the cards have removed them to protect their customers.
