I tried to update my iPod touch to the new iPod software but this froze my computer so the update failed. When I plug my iPod into iTunes it now tells me to restore. When I try and do that, at around halfway the bar freezes and won't finish restoring. I have tried waiting (for about 5 hours), using recovery mode and switching USB ports but nothing seems to work. Please help!
Sounds like a problem I had. It didn't work on my computer, so I ended up having to restore it on a different computer. I know this probably wont help, sorry.
Restoring on a different computer like Zimmer483 did is one possible solution. There are some other things to try if that doesn't work at

The same issue happened to me yesterday and the basic fixes didn't work. I'll try updating on another computer. I hope it works, I haven't had the IPod Touch for very long or used it very often, it will be a shame to have wasted that money.
I'm having the same problem as of earlier today. I've tried everything the troubleshooting page suggest except to restore on a different computer, there isn't another computer.
Hey Spyglass Sally.... tried the fix on that link, but it just keeps going back to "Connect to ITunes". Thanks for taking an interest though, Apple doesn't seem to care, even though it's problem caused by their iOS 4 update, and now my Touch is useless.
I'm another one with this exact problem, ever since trying to install the 4.0.2 update(which resulted in it freezing), my ipod has been stuck in recovery mode. I've tried reinstalling itunes, using different computers, downgrading to previous firmware, but all result in the restore freezing at some point and never finishing.
I was trying to restore my itouch because it was in recovery mode with 'connect to itunes' I clicked on restore and it downloaded the software and stuff. Then itunes says 'waiting for ipod' and the ipod showed the apple logo with an empty status bar FOR A LONG TIME (I waited hours). Tried everything, even tried using blackra1n to jailbreak+make it work again but NOTHING worked at all.
I was able to create a new account on my mac, allow ITunes to install the latest update and then finally restore. Then I went back to my regular account which (thankfully) is where all my music and apps are and reload.
