What DVD software on a Macbook pro internal drive using OS 10.15.7?

I reloaded 10.15.7 on a 2012 MacBook Pro. BTW apple support could/wood not help, I had to call MicroCenter. Now I cannot get the internal DVD drive to accept a DVD. When I push the DVD into the internal drive it goes instill about an inch of the DVD is out of the drive. If I connect an external DVD drive it works fine. I have not used this computer for about 2 years and only want to use it to play DVD's.

Any ideas if it is SW or HW? If software what SW do I need?

Your built-in optical drive seems to have a hardware issue, so you will need to use the external optical drive.

macOS uses Quicktime player included with macOS, but the app may be too old to work with some newer DVDs due to the newer content protection they may be using. In that case, try using VLC.

Troubleshooting the DVD Drive of a Mac:

A. Is there a Drive Even Seen?:

To Find Out:

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Select: About this Mac
  3. Click: System Report... button
  4. View: Hardware on left-column
  5. Click: Disc Burning
  6. Confirm if a Superdrive is Even Seen

B. Close All Apps:

Save what need be, and then close all apps, and try this once more. Use Force Quit for this. See if this applications open. If that is the case, save what need be (if possible), and then Force Quit. Attempt this once more.

  1. Go To: Apple Menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: An Item Ending in: “Not Responding
  4. Click: Force Quit button

C. Try Using a New Administrator User:

See what happens when you create a new Administrator User and login to it and perform this. If it works, then it is something misconfigured in your current user. If not, then it is a hardware issue.

D. Restart the Mac:

Shut down to Mac for 30 seconds, and then boot up login in normally

E. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, attempt another update install. For instructions, go here: How to Use Safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support
