remove a jpg background and make it black

In preview, I accidentally used smart lasso and made the background I had removed black. The result for the portrait photo was stunning. But, I don't remember what I did I Preview, smart lasso, because it was an accident. Any help from anyone?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.6

Apple support's online article (link below) may be helpful in using smart lasso to:

Extract an image or remove a background in Preview on Mac - Apple Support


You may have used copy and paste to paste the image-minus-background into a new, completely black file.


In Preview, you can also try: Tools > Remove background (Note: The background will then become transparent, so Preview needs to convert the .jpg file to a different format (eg: .png).
