The procedure is to replace the iPhone 6 with a newer iPhone. For the iPhone 6, released nearly 10 years ago, iOS 12 is the end of the line. You can't update it to iOS 13 or higher.

If you replace your iPhone, I would suggest getting one that will be able to run iOS 18. It seems likely that Apple will come out with new iPhones at about the same time they release iOS 18. You can see which existing phones will be able to run iOS 18 by looking at the list at the end of iOS 18 Preview - Apple .

Already, we are seeing some apps require iOS 16 or later. (In India, UPI payment apps require iOS 17, apparently as the result of a requirement that NCPI is imposing on all UPI app vendors.)

If you are tempted to buy a used iPhone to "save money", read

so you know what to look for to avoid getting an Activation Locked, and possibly stolen, "brick".

You cannot update an iPhone 6 to iOS 15. For that phone, which originally ran iOS 8, iOS 12 is the end of the line.

If iOS 12 is not good enough, you will need a newer iPhone. Here is a checklist that you may find useful when you go out to purchase one.

  • Since some popular apps now require iOS 16 or even iOS 17, get an iPhone that is compatible with iOS 18. Note that for 5G cellular support, you will need an iPhone 12-series phone or better. Check Technical Specifications if you have any questions about a particular model's capabilities.

  • If you are considering buying a used iPhone, be sure to read the following User Tip. It could help you learn what to look for to reduce your chances of purchasing an Activation-Locked and possibly stolen "brick."

  • Once you purchase a new phone, you may want to transfer your data to it.
