why does ios want to delete my gmail
I cannot receive latest email on my gmail address. To set up a new password, i get rerouted and prompted to allow IOS to delete my gmail etc. Why is that necessary?

Just choose Allow. It is a prompt from Google wanting to verify that you want a third party application to have access to your Gmail account. This is necessary to get your emails and delete them in the Mail app.
The alternative is to not use the Mail app and manage your emails in a web browser.
