Copy and Paste with trackpad Macbook Air

When using trackpad on Macbook Air, I am able to select copy - however when attempting to paste, it opens a new tab with the current screen I am working in. Any work around this?

I'm assuming you have your trackpad set so that the secondary click (control-click) is activated when you tap on the trackpad with two fingers? If so, it should work. I just tested it repeatedly.

You can also set it to activate by clicking in one of the bottom corners. System Settings>Trackpad>Secondary Click>2 fingers

If that's not what you're doing, please explain.
