How to always show the screenshot markup or annotation controls in macOS Sonoma

Hey all,

After taking a screenshot, I've got the editor window — is there anyway to always show the annotation controls rather than constantly having to hit the button to the right manually? Or at least may be there is some hotkey for this tool?

This was the case pre-Sonoma. I updated after Monterey and got tons of frustration.

Thank you

No, because you got here by using Quick Look which has no default settings other than what you see when you display an image in it. You will need to click the markup icon every time you need it.

I have my Command-Shift-5 -> Options set so the screenshot is saved to Applications-> Preview and then I use Preview-> Tools (menu)-> Annotate and other Preview capabilities to edit and annotate my screenshots.

I can then Command-A (select all), Command-C (copy) and then Paste the edited screenshot wherever I want.

Or if I want to upload to discussions.apple.com, Command-S and save it to a file.

I have never known that tool to be pre-selected in any macOS version, whether using Quick Look or opening an image in Preview. Do you recall if there was a setting to that effect? I can't find one.

I don’t think there was a setting per se, but I vaguely remember in preview if it was open previously, it would remain open on the next document. However, it is true that it was pre-Sonoma, but very much pre-pre-pre-Sonoma like back in Catalina. The change came about close to the beginnings of the iOSification of macOS.

Ok, that changes things (maybe) but that's not how my workflow had been at the time, so I can't be sure.

Whenever I use that thumbnail it's just to drag an image someplace. If I want to actually edit a screenshot I use the Share icon to open Preview.

Apple generally doesn't take away functionality with macOS upgrades. There are exceptions when a valid reason exists, but if you have reason to believe removing such a useful feature lacks technical justification and has frustrated a workflow that you have grown to rely upon, then you should definitely ask them to reconsider that decision.

Like High Sierra? Doesn't happen. The annotation "toolbox" is always inactive every time I open a PDF regardless of its state when that document was previously closed or upon quitting Preview.

Same for El Capitan and even Snow Leopard. So if it's a setting or something, perhaps an ancient defaults write command, I still don't know what the OP is talking about.

Haven't tried Tiger or Panther yet, but I could...
