AirPods Max no longer connecting. Previously working fine. (Solution provided)

It started intermittently. AirPods Max would not automatically connect to iPhone or iPad, even when both had the latest OS updates. Then one day, it stopped connecting for good. After searching the internet, visited Apple Store and talked to Apple Support over the phone. We tried soft reset, hard - factory reset (holding both noise control and volume buttons, etc.). One thing that was odd, was that after holding Noice and Volume long enough, the light should first glow amber, then white. But it never showed the white light. Out of luck. Apple wanted almost $300 to send it in for a fix.

I didn’t send it in. Here is the solution to this problem:

  1. unplug, disconnect, take it out of the cover. Let the AirPods Max discharge fully. I mean fully, as it leaving it outside the cover for days or weeks, to be sure. This seemed to be the critical step.
  2. Charge it fully.
  3. go through the steps of factory reset

after this, they magically connected again, basically ran through the initial setup steps on my iPhone. Saved me tons of money.

Make sure to follow step 1. The AirPods MUST be fully discharged, then charged again.
