What happens if my returned item gets damaged on the way?

Hi, I recently bought an iPad Air 13" for school but decided that getting a MacBook would be the better option. So I contacted Apple and returned the iPad. I packaged everything correctly, including my return label, etc.

The delivery guy (sent by a company Apple works with, I guess, because they knew it was a returned Apple device) just picked up my package today, but now I'm scared of it getting damaged on the way.

What would happen in that case? Should I have asked the delivery guy to check and verify that my items had no damage or something like that?

Thanks. (I chose "Using the Community" as the topic because I couldn't find a fitting one. Sorry about that.)

Shipping companies usually won't verify that a shipment is intact when they accept it, though a given driver might balk if the box is clearly damaged or seriously incorrectly packed. In my experience, though, they usually just take whatever they're given. They definitely won't inspect the contents.

That said, if the return arrives at Apple damaged or is lost, then you may have to negotiate with Apple about the issue. Strictly speaking, since they're technically the "shipper" of record they should be responsible, but I've seen anecdotal reports of returns being lost or damaged and Apple then refusing the credit. I've not found any sort of official policy statement from Apple on the issue.

I've sent products back to Apple and never had an issue, so the chances of anything happening are small. If it does, though, and Apple refuses the credit, you'll need to discuss the situation with Apple.

Regards.
