"Now Playing" in Control Center Stuck/Frozen and Non-Responsive--fix??

When I open Control Center on my new MacBook Pro, I see two items in the "Now Playing" section. Both were opened a few days ago on Safari. They're still there, non-responsive, useless and very annoying. I have gone back to Safari (no tabs open), cleared my history--and they're still there. That seems silly that there isn't a quick and useful way to clear that. Surely there is and I'm just missing it?

Thanks, y I've seen the safe boot mode mentioned elsewhere--but man, that's a lot of hassle for a splinter stuck in your craw that doesn't really get permanently taken care of. And it makes me think "c'mon, Apple: a toggle to turn this off (or even refresh) in the Control Panel prefs can't *possibly be that hard... REALLY??

Any other ideas? A patch or routine that can clear/update/fix this running in the background?
