The pictures I take with my iPhone 12 are going into the cloud and I've got hundreds there. When I use the pictures app everything that I find is from 2022 or older. Could I possibly have set up two accounts? How do I verify this?

There is only one iCloud account for each Apple ID. It's possible for one person to have two Apple IDs, but they must have two different email addresses.
It's not clear what you mean by "the pictures app"-- there could be different kinds, but only the Photos app syncs with iCloud. Do you mean the Photos app on your iPhone?
