Using the start button on my iPad no longer returns to the first Home Screen. In fact all the screens have disappeared apart from the very last.
I’ve tried a cold reset several times but it doesn’t fix it.
How can I reach my disappeared screens, particularly the first one?

Try this:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.
I would suggest first making a backup, if your iPad isn't backing up to iCloud automatically, just in case something more is amiss.
