How to transfer music from macbook pro to ipod nano (without iTunes)

I just resurfaced my trusty iPod Nano, and want to bring it back to life and start using it regularly.

How can I transfer MP3 files to the IPod from my Macbook Pro?

I can put some files on the IPod, but the player does not recognize them.

To manage your iPod on a Mac using OS Catalina (10:15) or later, use Finder, which replaces iTunes on the Mac. See the following Apple article: Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with your Mac – Apple Support (UK)
