Paying to 'unlock' ATMOS?!

I can't get ATMOS via, say, spotify on my iphone

I asked Apple support & they went into my phone and explained that the iOS was badly installed at this Apple Store I bought it from and I should go to the hassle of reinstalling it but I had no luck with this and contacted them again today

They now say that I have to pay them every month for Apple Music on top of Spotify or whatever other streaming service I have if I want to enable Atmos on 3rd party services!

this all seems to be unfair to me if my phone has features and abilities I have to pay extra for as I've certainly heard Atmos previously on iPhones...?

thanks in advance everyone!

You may have misheard them. They may have been saying that if you want Dolby Atmos, you need to subscribe to Apple Music because Apple Music has it – and at least some of the other subscription services don't.

These sites indicate that the Apple Music subscription service supports Dolby Atmos.

According to a February 2024 article that I found on a third-party site,

"Inherently, Spotify itself does not support Spatial Audio as a feature within its platform. This revelation comes straight from the horse's mouth, with Spotify customer service affirming that Spatial Audio isn't officially baked into the app's offerings."

This November 2023 article says much the same thing.

Headphonesty – Does Spotify Have Spatial Audio? Easy Tips for Immersive Sound

It looks like people use workarounds to try to simulate Spatial Audio to make up for Spotify's lack of features in this area. I guess the ultimate workaround would be to switch to a streaming service (like Apple Music) that actually did support Dolby Atmos.
