Import Window Thumbnails Option - GONE?

For some time now I have noticed that there's no option to show thumbnails or filmstrip in the Import Window (final cut pro 10.8.1). The only option is to show waveforms...

It's causing me all kinds of bother.

I tried ditching the preferences - but no luck with that.

Are we really stuck with it?

The clip ordering should be retained.

As for navigating among thousands of files, the import window in FCP is not ideal for this. I use it because I don’t have have that many, and usually know beforehand what I want. For your situation, I would just use all the power of Finder and drag directly from the Finder to the desired event in FCP. Note that when dragging the import settings that you have in Final Cut Pro->Settings are applied, eg whether to copy or leave in place. You can toggle this for one import by holding down the Option key. There is a visual cue (either a green plus or a curved arrow) to indicate which is applied.

Tom, thanks for your interest in this, but surely you remember this option?

This image is from a YouTube video. Not sure I can add a link here, but I'll try:

YouTube video showing Thumbnails in FCP Import Window (about 60sec).

The video was uploaded a year ago...

It seems Thumbnails not available any more - a serious blow to my workflow. I have thousands of clips which I need to access and if they don't show up in my (massive) Events, I have to look for them with the Import window - which is not ideal.

Apart from the Thumbnails problem, every time you click on a folder, the contents display in random order, so you have to click "Name" (twice) to organise the clips. Then you open the next folder, and repeat the process. If you have several folders, it's very tedious because the settings default to random every time.

I use the import window a lot, and that option is there for me no matter what I'm importing or where I'm importing from. I have noticed on rare occasion the menu option is gone. I figured it was a bug.

Now, there is a difference in what is shown. Cards will show all the options (thumbnail size, clip view duration, etc). But off of a drive, when you're selecting individual clips, it only shows the waveform option.

Either way, than menu should always be there.

Thanks again, Luis.

I'm pretty sure that until comparatively recently, the clip would be copied into the library when you dragged it into an event, regardless of your import settings - so it's good that someone has approved this.

If only they would allow thumbnails for importing from an HD - but there you go!

Following your advice I spent the last couple of days successfully dragging thousands of clips into my libraries via Finder. I was relieved to discover that if the clip is already in the Event, FCPX will not duplicate it. That's another recent change for the better.
