Is a 2017 iMac (iMac Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017) compatible with a Sony HD Blu-ray Player (Sony UBP-X700)? In my case, the computer doesn't seem to recognize the external device...

I don't see anything in the specs for that Sony to indicate that it can be used as an external drive for a computer (of any type or generation). The only way such a player could be used with a computer would be to have a video capture box capable of HDMI input and software that can play Blu-Ray disks (something scarce if available at all). Otherwise there's no output from that Sony that's computer-capable.

Yep, sorry, that's what I guessed and that's not going to be possible with that player. Your best bet to play those movies on your Mac is if they offer a digital copy.

If you have an external 4K HDMI display with a spare HDMI port and built-in speakers, you might consider connecting the Sony device in that manner, using the Sony remote to control the player. If that works, you won't need any software on the Mac to view the Blu-ray playback.
I have a spare LG UBK-80 UHD 4K Blu-ray player I have been meaning to try in this mode with my dual HDMI port LG 32-inch display but have not done so yet.
Mac OS does not natively support Blu-ray which means it needs additional software to do so. You don't say what you intend to do with the drive such as store on data on it or use it to just watch movies so you need to be more specific. Your best bet is to contact www.macsales.com (call them if necessary) and tell them what you want to do and they can steer you to a DVD player and software that will work for your needs.
