conncecting a USA iMac to France outlets.

Are all Mac power cords detachable? Some say I just need to buy a French power cable at the Apple Store. Or do I just need a wall adapter?

An iMac would have a three-prong grounded/earthed power cable (the latest models to a power adapter; otherwise to the iMac itself).

Some international plug adapters may not correctly handle the ground/earth connection. Therefore, for safety reasons, the best way would be to look for a complete (original Apple) power cable for your exact iMac model/year, with the correct plug for wall sockets in France. You could perhaps ask Apple Support where to find this locally in France (maybe via an authorised Apple service provider or reseller, or through an Apple Store).

General information about plugs and sockets can be found here:

It is good practice to double-check the mains voltage and frequency requirements before connecting anything in a foreign country. Usually, this is not a problem with modern Apple products, since they typically have an input voltage range 100-240 V AC at 50-60 Hz, but to be sure (and in order to rule out any local deviations), always read the label or text on the electrical device/equipment in question (a magnifying glass may be needed).
