I often have several short footnotes on one page. But they stack, taking up unneccesary space. Is there a way to have them go across the page with short spaces, with a wrap if they go to the end of the page? I could save room for more text that way. (I much prefer footnotes to Endnotes.)

You are asking for a footnote feature that does not exist in Pages.
