Paying a business with a bank credit card on Apple Pay

I want to use Apple Pay on my IPad Air 5 to pay a business with my bank credit card which is the default card in Apple Wallet. I don’t use Apple Cash. The business has sent me its phone number. How do I send the payment.

If the merchant accepts Apple Pay then you can enter the card number on their website. If you’re at the merchants physical location you use your iPhone to select the payment method and tap your iPhone to the transaction terminal.

Using a phone number for payment could be a scam involving Apple Cash. Apple Pay and Apple Cash are two different things. Legitimate businesses use the methods I outline above. It is not permitted per the terms of Apple Cash for it to be used for commercial/business. Your Apple Cash account can be permanently locked and closed for using Apple Cash in the method you describe above.

You would have no protections at all because of the violation.

They want you to pay using Apple Cash, that is why they sent you the phone number. This is not advised and you will have no guarantees that you will get any product/service and there is no way for you to get the money back.

You are correct the only way the merchant can accept Apple Pay is through a link on their website that you will access with Safari.

I understand you say it is not a scam, but the action the merchant has taken to get money from you is equivalent to the common scam where you are sent to a store to purchase Gift Cards and send the codes to them. A legitimate business knows they cannot accept direct P2P transactions using their phone number in messages as that is a violation of the Apple Cash user agreement. In addition, the money is not going to a business, it is going to an individual.

Thank you for your response. You confirmed my understanding that the only way to send money from Apple Wallet on an iPad to a phone number is through Apple Cash. My situation - using a credit card for a commercial transaction - does not qualify for Apple Cash.

Apple advertising and Support encourage adding a bank credit card to Apple Wallet on iPad. Online there is plenty of information on how to add the card to the iPad Wallet but very little on how to use it. Ideally, it should be more clear about the specific circumstances under which one can use a bank credit card in an iPad Apple Wallet to pay a merchant.

Any business that supports Apple Pay lists it as an option when they ask for your payment method. You will see it along side Credit, Debit, PayPal, or any other payment method they accept. After you choose Apple Pay as the option, all you need to do is double click the side button to confirm payment. There is no need to enter card details like you would have if you chose the Credit/Debit option.

In my experience with online purchases, about 90% of them support Apple Pay. All the major companies that I use offer it and I use it to pay my Cell phone, Car Insurance, Internet and for other online purchases such as Amazon. I only have 1 local power company that does not offer it on their website.

Thank you for your prompt response. Regrettably, it does not address my situation.

The merchant has offered only a phone number for payment, not a website. Tap-and-pay is not applicable since the merchant is hundreds of miles away and I'm not using an iPhone but rather an iPad without NFC support.

While the merchant has offered only a phone number, this is not a scam. I understand that the only way to use an iPad to send Apple Wallet money to a phone number is through iMessage - which is limited to Apple Cash and non-commercial transactions. That's not my situation.

From your response, I understand that there is no way to use Apple Pay on an iPad to pay a merchant with a bank credit card in Apple Wallet if the merchant has provided only a phone number. Am I correct that such a transaction can be done only through some Apple Pay link on the merchant's website which I will need to access through Safari?
