Final Cut Pro using a German keyboard layout

While following a course I found that shortcutkeys didn't work as expected. Turns out in Final Cut Pro my shortcuts keyboard is set to what seems to be German. It's not my language or keyboardsettings in macOS. I found multiple posts about this. But no solutions. It seems to be a longstanding problem. Deleting preferences by starting FCP with option-command didn't work for me.

Anybody knows what to do?

I see, that is one of the problematic shortcuts, because with the German layout you need the Option key to type a bracket: [ is Option-5, and ] is Option-6

Incidentally: I have activated both the US and the German layouts, and what I am seeing in my FCP is that it dutifully changes from one to the other, according to what is selected in the system - the two screenshots below were taken 3 seconds apart, and as you can see the keyboard did change (I did have to close and reopen the Command Editor, but that was it; no need to quit FCP).

A few things to try:

1) Add the German layout and switch back and forth to see if FCP gets "unstuck" and shows the correct layout

2) Delete FCP settings

3) If the problem persists, try this: in the search box at the top right, type eg "Left", and see what is set for Select Left Edge. You may be able to at least choose a different shortcut.

Luis, I've had this bug for years but I don't make much use of custom keyboards so it's not really bothered me. However, I thought I'd give your idea a go. I added a German and US layout to my British one and tried switching while the command set was open. Curiously, up by the search input, the keyboard I was switching to briefly flashed up a blue box with the correct 2 letter code (GB, DE, US) but the layout didn't change. It is obviously receiving the instruction but not implementing it! You would think about 2 lines of check code would fix this even if the software engineers don't know why it's happening!

Do you mean something like this (mine shows green instead of blue because that's the highlight or accent color in my system settings):

This appears when you press the shortcut to switch input sources and hold the modifier (e.g. press control-option-space, and keep holding down the control and option keys). You can then press space several times to switch. I tend to just select the one I want from the menu bar.

AFAICT, why for some users the onscreen keyboard in Final Cut Pro Commands window shows in German (QWERTZ) even though the system language is English and the active system layout is US (QWERTY) is and remains an unsolved mystery.

HOWEVER, this should not cause problems, with the possible exception of very few keys, which require a modifier in the German layout (specifically requiring the Option key), but no modifier in the US layout.

All other keys should work as expected, even if they show in the wrong place. For example, Command-Z should still be undo, and shortcuts that you set yourself should also work - using the letter indicated.

What specific shortcuts are not working for you?

Curiouser and curiouser...

I had tried deleting the settings before which did nothing.

So now I started with adding German and US international input at the keyboard. In addition to my normal Dutch.

Switching between this didn't seem to work but I later discovered that I hadn't actually switched the way you mentioned in the topbar. (I clicked the language in the menu where you can add languages and then clicked ok which does nothing) But before I realised this (and while I was still in Dutch (NL) mode) I started FCP using option-command to delete the settings and the dialog box came up in German! FCP was completely set to German (no problem, I speak the language) But strange that FCP switches to German not because of system settings but because of the availability of that language as a keyboard option?? Makes you think FCP is very German-minded ;) But the even stranger thing; now the shortcut keyboard was actually QWERTY!

Eventually I deleted German as an input language for keyboard and dictation which I had set sometime (maybe that was the problem?). After that everything works "normal" so QWERTY again.

Conclusion; people with this problem should indeed add German as a keyboard input language. Maybe switching to it as you mention and then deleting it again. Dit the trick for me at least.

Thanks for your speedy and helpfull response Luis!

Luis, I've had this bug for years but I don't make much use of custom keyboards so it's not really bothered me. However, I thought I'd give your idea a go. Thank you for the screen recording. That blue thing is unrelated to FCP. It appears in whichever text field is active in macOS when you change the input source.

Again, note that the layout in the Command Editor does not change while you it open.

Did you try closing the Command Editor, then changing the input source, and then reopening the Command Editor? That is what works for me.
