Very simple question: how do I search for items that have no tag? I know how to use tags:green in the search to find green tags, but what would I use to find files with no tag?
Related, when I use "+" to add a criteria and choose "tags", I can't get any hits. I've tried all the options: contains, begins with, is, matches, ends with, even is not "green" and no hits.

I first posted that it didn't work, but I hadn't read the post carefully enough. However:
NOT tag:green -- shows all tagged items.
NOT tag: green -- (space between colon and green) shows all not green tags
NOT tag:"" does find items with no tag.
I tried tag:"" (thinking that's what you meant) and if finds all tags.

If Spotlight has indexed your Mac use spotlight. The magnifying glass icon in the menubar.
Spotlight is not useful for two reasons. I'm searching a specific folder and I don't believe it can search for tags.
