Search for items with NO tag

Very simple question: how do I search for items that have no tag? I know how to use tags:green in the search to find green tags, but what would I use to find files with no tag?

Related, when I use "+" to add a criteria and choose "tags", I can't get any hits. I've tried all the options: contains, begins with, is, matches, ends with, even is not "green" and no hits.

In a Finder Window search field (not Finder Find panel), enter the following to exclude tagged files or folders:

NOT tag:""

to reduce the clutter, you may want to consider narrowing the scope of your search to include documents or PDFs:

kind:pdf AND NOT tag:""
kind:word AND NOT tag:""
kind:document AND NOT tag:""
