Unable to set-up IMAP on iPhone with new The Messaging Co IMAP server settings for ozemail email - Apple email verification for Ozemail accounts defaulting to old POP settings not the IMAP settings.

Ozemail emails are now migrated to The Messaging Company.

The Messaging Company recommends using IMAP (and we all know why, so I do not want POP)

The Messaging Company IMAP mail server settings are:

IMAP

Incoming Mail Server Username:Your email address

Server:imap.themessagingco.com.au

Server Port:993

Security Type:SSL/TLS

Outgoing Mail Server ~ Username:Your email address

Server:smtp.themessagingco.com.au

Server Port:465 or 587

Security Type:SSL/TLSSTARTTLS

The Messaging Company website under Set up email on iPhone or iPad (https://support.themessaging.co/hc/en-au/articles/21662138914201-Set-up-email-on-iPhone-or-iPad)

says (with correct screenshots matching my iPhone):

    1. From the home screen, open the Settings app
    2. Scroll down until you see Passwords & Accounts
    3. Select Mail
    4. Select Accounts
    5. Add Account
    6. Select Other
    7. Select Add Mail Account
    8. Enter your name into the Name field
    9. Enter your email address into the Email field
    10. Enter your password into the Password field
    11. In the Description field enter a name for your email account, then select Next
    12. On NEXT  the instructions show a screenshot with  IMAP heading and the options to select mail -  and Notes.

HOWEVER

This screen does not appear - instead the whirling gif and the words Verifying appear on the iPhone then all the NAME, email, password, description fields get a tick.

and the account is set up as a POP using the old POP.ozemail.com.au incoming server NOT the IMAP.themessagingco.com.au server and the outgoing server is also smtp.ozemail.com.au not the new SMTP.themessagingco.com.au server plus the ports are set to Pop not IMAP.

I have contacted Apple who used screen sharing on my phone to confirm that the ozemail mail account cannot be set up as anything other than a POP.ozemail.com.au server.

APPLE says that these server settings are "as provided" and The Messaging Company has not communicated new IMAP settings and the default verification by Apple is to a POP server - NOT to an IMAP server belonging to The Messaging Company.

I have contacted The Messaging company and they appear to not understand why their instructions do not work.

I contacted iinet (ozemail etc) who said that these server settings were the old ones and originally there were also IMAP settings but they are no longer available to apple verification and these should have been updated by The messaging Co.

Is anyone able to help with setting up the email as an IMAP with a way of bypassing the Apple server validation OR can any one get Apple to update the server defaults (see above)

The messaging Company does not seem to be able to do this and it appears that all their servers may be defaulting to POP. (Anyone else losing email history since the migration?)

I have always had my iPhone set to IMAP but the recent migration to The Messaging Co has caused problems and having to now set the iPhone up with the new server settings - I have discovered that there is no longer the option to set up the phone using IMAP as previously under ozemail/iinett/westnet mail service provider.

FYI - I tried to set up a new account while in flight mode and progressed with being able to manually enter the IMAP server settings and got as far as verification then it failed as I could not turn off the flight mode while in the email set up verifications screen.

All help appreciated please.

There is no option because IMAP is now the default choice, with a fallback to POP when IMAP isn’t available or isn’t playing well with others, which here implies the IMAP server is likely not presenting as iOS expects, and the automatic fallback is selecting POP.

Seems there might be hosting issues, based on this recent thread: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/30x1z2xn

I’m not inclined to poke at a mail server to check its settings, though. Mail server admins can sometimes get cranky about poking.

Given what I’m reading in that thread, I might host mail elsewhere.
