Using "Option" key + "/" to type a division symbol does not work in Google Sheets on Macbook Pro M1 running Sonoma 14.6.1. Is there a workaround?

When in a data entry field in a Google Sheets spreadsheet and using the typical "Option" key in combination with the forward slash key to type a division symbol, instead of the "divide by" symbol ( ÷ ) what I get is a pop-up window with a prompt to import a file. The "Option + /" shortcut does work as expected in other areas of the Chrome browser, like here (above) in this text entry box. Is this a keyboard mapping problem? Or perhaps an incompatibility between the Mac OS and Google Sheets? Has anyone experienced and/or resolved this quirky issue?
