Why can't I access Office on my MacBook Pro

Suddenly I can no longer access Office on my MacBook Pro. The message says that the developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS (Catalina 10.15.7). Contact developer for more information. I am awaiting an answer from the developer, but it could take 24 hours, and I have work to do. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what is the solution?

That sounds like you have Office 2011 or older which, being 32-bit apps, cannot run on any macOS higher than 10.14 "Mojave." You need an updated Office 2016 or a newer version to run on Catalina of higher.

Whether you can run Office at all depends on your Macbook Pro's SUB-MODEL from "About this Mac...":

If you tell us your SUB-MODEL we can better advise you on how to proceed.

MS will only activate a new install of Office on Macs running the current and past two macOS versions. Today that is Sonoma macOS 14; Ventura macOS 13; and Monterey macOS 12. With a week or two, Monterey will fall off the list when Apple releases Sequoia macOS 15.

If your Macbook Pro cannot run those OS versions, you can no longer install Office. You will nee dot look at productivity suite option lte the open-source LibreOffice.

Catalina won't run 32-bit applications. If you have an old version of Office that uses 32-bit code, forget using it on Catalina.

Microsoft only supports "the most recent three" versions of macOS, and Catalina isn't one of them, so purchasing Microsoft Office Home & Student or renting Microsoft 365 might not be a practical option, either. There are online versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that run in a Web browser, but they're probably not as good as standalone applications.

Microsoft – Use Microsoft 365 apps for free on the web

There is also LibreOffice. I believe that it will open many Office documents and that it will run on Catalina.
