Merge audio from random places throughout FCP

My FCP project has narration - I'd like to make the volume and tone consistent so I'd like to make it one audio file (a compound clip)- however the audio clips are scattered throughout the project - some are at the top, some at the bottom. I don't know how to select them without also selected clips that run next to them - it feels impossible - I'm sure I'm unaware of some "weird trick"

You already got a perfect answer from terryb - do follow his recommendation.

I'd just like to add a little reminder about a great feature of FCP that is often neglected: the Timeline Index.

By using it you can do multiple selections using the standard mac techniques (like command-click for noncontiguous selections), plus you can search to narrow it down to the things you want, and more.

So in other circumstances where you might want to do complex searches or selections, remember this nifty feature.
