Hotmail issues when away from home network

I've been using Hotmail with my MacBook Pro for years with very few issues but recently when I am using a network away from home I keep getting a message 'Unable to verify name or password'. On a number of occasions rebooting or deleting the mail account and reconnecting has worked but not consistently. As I am writing this I have tried everything and the only way I can get it to connect is via a hotspot on my phone. I don't want to use my limited data so this is not a good workaround.

Details: MacBook Pro Late 2013

Big Sur Version 11.7.10

Does anyone have any suggestions, many thanks.

What ports & protocol are you using?

Are you using a VPN?

Then there is...

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification (microsoft.com)

What about application passwords? Will that keep working?

If application passwords are being used for MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) along with basic auth as another auth mechanism, then when basic authentication is disabled, app passwords used for MFA will stop working too.

Where can I find more information?

There are several resources that we wanted to provide here as additional reading:
