Why can't Apple's Mail app delete multiple messages?

I select multiple emails in the list column and go to Edit > Delete. They disappear, but in a few seconds come back. Same thing happens using the trash can icon, and same thing when right-clicking and choosing Delete.

Mail can delete single messages ok, but some folders that I'm finally cleaning up have many msgs, and that is too inefficient. I'll have to access my email through the web browser to delete multiple msgs unless there's a fix.

I didn't discover a 'fix.' As Mac Jim ID wrote; if Apple Mail is mirroring my Yahoo email account, Yahoo may not have had time to delete all the ones I've selected before Mail 'syncs up' with Yahoo. I'm guessing that Mail deletes the hundreds or so emails, then immediately checks Yahoo to 'mirror' it, and Yahoo hasn't yet deleted them, so Mail keeps showing them. What I did was to select a batch, but less than the big batches I originally selected, then hit the trashcan button. So far, that seems to work. Not ideal, but smaller batches maybe give Yahoo time to act. Again, just guessing. You may have to experiment to find an optimum size for your batch. And I think performance may fluctuate, like if Yahoo (or the server you're using) is having issues, it may be slower on some days than others, so sometimes the problem might recur. I hope that makes sense...

I routinely select emails the same way and delete them and they don't come back. I would think other users do the same thing, so I suspect it is something to do with that specific email account. I am almost positive it is an IMAP account that just mirrors the servers of your email provider. You are deleting them from your device, but your email provider has not deleted them from their server, so they are sent right back to you. Is this by chance a gmail account?

Let us know the name of the email provider and we may be able to provide a specific solution.

Thanks. The email provider is Yahoo. I suspect you are right. I tried multiple deletes today, and didn't select as many to delete in one go. I also waited a second longer before hitting the trash icon (don't know if that really helped or not): so far it seems the deleted messages are really deleted. I'm still experimenting with it to see if the problem in my situation is just selecting too many at once, where what you described about the email provider not yet deleting them comes into play. I appreciate your input.

I am having the same issue and have been experiencing it for quite awhile. I just haven't been bothered to try and solve it. My inboxes are inundated with junk mail or old mail that I can not delete in bulk. The bulk emails will disappear when I delete them and then come back within a few seconds. Even if I leave the mail app open for a day or so, they never delete. I can delete them one at a time which as the first poster mentioned is extremely inefficient. Very frustrating!

I am using an IMAP email account with GoDaddy's Microsoft 365 exchange servers. I am currently running Apple Mail Version 16.0 (3731.700.6.1.2) on a MacBook with MacOs Ventura 3.6.9.

Any solution/fix would be appreciated!
