SDerrorDomain error 108 on external boot drive - PLEASE help

I’m trying to install the same version of MacOS I’m running on an eternal SSD and I’m trying to boot from it, but when I select the disk as my startup disk I get “SDerrorDomain error 108”.

I got through the installation process fine,  then afterwards when I chose the external volume to boot from I got the error.

Things I’ve tried so far:

I’ve tried booting in safe mode and doing the installation that way - same error when I try to select it as startup disk.

I’ve tried downloading Monterey and installing while logged in to my main system, same error.

I’ve tried cloning the SSD entirely with SuperDuper! - kernel panics and other nasties.

Changed security settings on the startup disk - selected reduced security to allow booting from external drives.

Same error.

13” MacBook Pro 2022

M2

Monterey 12.7.6

External drive also has Monterey 12.7.6 installed from recovery mode, it just can’t be used as a boot drive because of this error.

I’ve spent two days at this now, I’m at a complete loss and I really need this to work.

Help!

Hi Andrew...

I may have found a solution, have been on an off chats and calls with senior apple advisers.

  1. Create a bootable flash drive with the current OS you have installed on your internal drive.
  2. Open up recovery system once installed the MacOS version on the flash drive, I have an 14in M1 MBP so I just held the power button down until loading into startup.
  3. With the flash drive plugged in, you should have an option to install the MacOS version, in my case it was Ventura
  4. Go through the process, make sure your external drive is plugged in, and when it asks to choose where to install, choose the external drive.
  5. Let it do it’s business, when it eventually restarts don’t press keys or anything, let it do it’s thing.
  6. You should have a fresh install on your external drive ready to be set up now!

I tried installing the OS through the App Store and through recovery startup with no luck, tried with flash drive and it worked. I have full security on in both internal and external drives as well.

That error is generally an indication that there is not an authorized "owner" of the drive.

One solution you can try, back up the drive with either Time Machine or a cloning system that can clone the macOS data volume, i.e. it does not need to be bootable and may actually be preferred not to be. Then download and create a bootable installer of the current macOS version. Next, having backed up the drive, erase the target drive and reinstall macOS making sure you have your backup drive installed. When prompted to create an owner for the installation, create a new and unique user that is different from any on the internal drive and different than what was used in the backup. Follow through the installation processes and when reaching the point where it asks if you want to migrate data, proceed with the migration option and continue with the the install with the "new user". Once complete, you will have two users. The new user and the user you you migrated and you can then log out of the new user and then log into your usual user.

There is an issue that can occur when installing or updating on an external drive that can sometimes invalidate the "owner" of the macOS installation if it is also the same "owner" as another macOS installation on the same system.. So, when the next update comes along, do that with "new" user you created and hopefully all will be well.

Hopefully Apple will sort to his issue in the future with M1 Macs.

SDErrorDomain error 108 on M1 Mac Mini - Apple Community

Thanks for taking the time to write that incredibly comprehensive reply! But I've fixed the problem. It turns out trying to create bootables from previous(to Sonoma) versions of macOS has it's issues, which I assume to be deliberate on Apple's part, since I tried both Monterey and Ventura with no luck.

But when I installed Sonoma on the external it worked flawlessly as a boot drive.

This whole situation came about because Microsoft OneDrive had, unknown to me, ballooned the size of my Time Machine backup. And after an error that caused me to need to reinstall from a backup I was alarmed to learn I simply couldn't restore my system, because the backup was now 2x the size of my internal drive(OneDrive creates hardlinked files, that aren't on your system, but Time Machine thinks they are). Hence the need to create the external bootable, which i then restored my macOS backup onto, deleted the offending OneDrive files and then was able to restore my system on my internal drive from the external bootable. It was a fun week, to say the least.
