How do I stop continuous pop up alerts for virus on my iMac OS running High Sierra 10.13.6?

I’m experiencing an issue of small banners of the same theme briefly and repeatedly appearing on the screen regardless of which application is in use. They are all about an infected virus situation. This started when a webpage was clicked on and the results was some page that was unrelated to the advertised link. I took no action on this page but backed out of it quickly. I have not downloaded any anti-virus applications since I had understood that this was not necessary for an iMac. Obviously, it must be some sort of scam.

What action can be taken to eliminate these banners?

If there is some veracity to this announced virus, is there a way to check the health of the system?

It's a scam. Do not click on any of them. They're just trying to sucker you into either paying them for their fake "technical support" or to give them personal data so that they can raid your bank accounts. You can probably get rid of them via the website notification settings in Safari:

Thanks, Old Toad. I blocked the two websites that were responsible for the popups. However, the popups continued. I next went "notifications" and took out all of the websites and unchecked the "Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications."

You may be too young to recall the singing cowboy, Gene Autry and is iconic song which is applicable here. The title is "Back in the Saddle Again.

You're 12 years ahead of me in age and the knowledge of the Autry's horse. My first recollections of horse names were Roy Roger's and Dale Evans' horses, Trigger and Buttercup. Happy Trails.
