Deleted messages when cleaning storage

Keep in mind, you can only recover messages and conversations that you deleted within the last 30 to 40 days. If you delete a message before you updated to iOS 16 or later you can't recover that message.

However, it's unlikely that any will.

For the future, you might consider archiving important conversations to pdf or text file on your computer. I use an application called iMazing but there are others. I can save any text conversation or all of them to a file that is independent of my iPhone.

What message do you get? Test by taking a picture and deleting it, then go to the Recently Deleted folder, select the photo and choose delete. Post a Screenshot of what you see there.

If have only seen 2 types of messages. One that says it will be permanently deleted and another that may say the action cannot be undone.
