Use imac as a server?

Hello,

I currently run a simple very low traffic site on a linux machine. Maybee I could instead use my Imac 2023, 16 GB. I have Macports installed. It would be sufficient to install sqlite3 (macos version too old), php and nginx.

My biggest is concern is the power comsumtion. Imac needs to be constantly running and never go sleep. Is that bad for the machine?

I would appreciate your comments.

I just wanted to inform that now I am finished! I installed php, mariadb and nginx from macports. I use my Imac. I run my site with a user with normal privileges. It is extremely fast!

There shouldn't be any problem. People use Mac minis, which are in essence iMacs in a small box without a screen, as servers, often in rather extensive server farms. You'll of course need to set the power settings so that only the display of the iMac goes to sleep, and make sure nothing is impeding cooling, but otherwise it should be fine. Also, if you use the iMac for other purposes as well, that risks you doing something that would disrupt the server function (such as if restart the Mac for some reason). You might want to consider looking for a used Mac mini and just let that be your server.

Regards.
