My Apple Watch Ultra 2 is not tracking Sleep or Respiratory info

Hey clever iOS folks.

I switched to an Ultra2 in July (from what I think was a Watch 7 but not entirely sure how old it was).

With my prev Apple Watch I would simply stick it in sleep mode via the actions menu (same menu with the torch, flight mode, battery level etc on it)

since getting the Ultra2 I’ve never found a way to enable that (what seemed at the time very simple) option.

so my Ultra2 isn’t tracking sleep as a result.

has that option been removed on later watches os?

and now it can’t be done?

I have Track Sleep with Apple

Watch toggled On in the Watch app in my iPhone.

it’s such a shame as I have years of sleep data until the day I got this new watch.

second thing - and I’m wondering if it’s related. The same day, ie when I got the new watch, respiratory data hasn’t been recorded since either. Again I have breathing rate data for a looooong time, but none since I swapped watches.

respiratory is ON on the Watch privacy settings.

yet I’m still seeing resting heart rate being tracked for example.

I can’t get my head round this at all. It seemed really simple with the older watch.

the core of all of this seems to be that there isn’t a menu button to tell the watch you’re in Sleep mode (as far as I can tell).

I have noticed there’s a Sleep App in the watch but it’s not relevant as far as I can see as it would require me to set a sleep ‘schedule’ every single day, which would never be accurate anyway as I don’t know when I’m going to sleep until

I go to bed, so looking for the button that tells it ‘I’m going to bed, and until I switch the mode back off again then I’m in sleep’

(I’ve tried using sleep mode on the phone but that doesn’t do anything - and nor should it - the phone is elsewhere in the house so it’s not going to track anything)

The Sleep mode can be enabled/disabled in the Control Center of your watch, which can be accessed by pressing the Side button shortly.

If you can't see the icon, you can add it back, have a look at the related article:

As for tracking your sleep and the Respiratory Rate, have a look at this article:

So the answer to this is if I want to use the Sleep ‘Focus’ on the Watch, I had to mirror the watch and phone first.

(So that is what changed for me with the new watch. I’d never set up mirror (or took it off)).

Quite frustrating I thought, as I often want one device in one Focus and the other in a different one. And I’m sure I had it (mirror) turned off on the last watch so I did a bit more testing.

And the final solution was:

1 Set up the Mirror setting once.

2 Use one of the focus options (I tested the Sleep option) that now appear when you tap the DND icon in the control centre. The mirror toggle seems to grant the watch access to the phones Focus list

3 Then can remove the mirror toggle again and strangely (but thankfully) the focus options can still be accessed on the Watch, so am able to have one device in flight mode and not the other still (which I often do)

Sorted 👍👍
