Connecting a monitor to an older Macbook

I have an older MacBook Pro (2015-2017?) and a monitor with a USB C cable. Is there any adapter to plug this into my MacBook?

I don't believe there is any adapter that will let you use a USB-C (DisplayPort) video input on a monitor if the Mac or PC in question does not have USB-C (DisplayPort) output. Maybe a powered Thunderbolt 3/4 dock connected to a Thunderbolt 1/2 port on an old Mac, via an Apple TB 3-to-2 adapter, could do it. That arrangement would cost $$$ even if it worked. As for standalone adapters, the idea is to plug the USB-C end into the computer.

However, most monitors with USB-C (DisplayPort) input also have DisplayPort and/or HDMI input. If your MacBook Pro is from 2015 or earlier, it may have

  • A old-style Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port, with a Mini DisplayPort connector, that can double as a Mini DisplayPort
  • A dedicated HDMI port

Then you would use a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or HDMI to HDMI cable to attach the monitor.

Without a more precise identification of your MacBook Pro, it's impossible to say what resolutions and refresh rates it might support.
