Why is my Apple Pencil not connecting to my iPad via Bluetooth?

It says not connected in bluetooth settings but when i plug it in while in the lock screen, it says it’s connected (it isn't). I tried turning on and off bluetooth, restarting device but nothing works. The apple pencil does nothing even after i unpair it. Also it is a bit warm.
