Air Pods Pro 2 Hearing aids with only 5 hours battery life? What does one do for the other 7 hours of the day?

People with hearing disabilities use their hearing aids all day long. How can a 5 hour battery life Air Pod function as a hearing aid?

It’s an added function, for situational use.

It is not intended to replace dedicated hearing aids for people who need them.

If you need hearing aids, get actual hearing aids.

I think it was actually 12 hours. She mentioned 24 hours of talk time, but 12 hours in Hearing aid mode. But she also gave me wrong info about the Pro 2s. She said they were on pre-order. I got mine yesterday. NOTE: you don't have to wait for the software update to use them as hearing aids. Everything is in your iPhone under Settings. But it takes some drilling down to various settings to activate the hearing aid mode. There are youtube videos that show the steps.

I'm guessing the software update will include a separate Hearing Aid app so you can easily set the hearing aid mode and switch back to music mode.

What photomantx has to worry about is the same thing I'm worrying about. I spent big bucks on hearing aids that might be useless compared to the AirPods. Behind-the-ear models have the microphones facing backwards, so they are already useless in restaurants and other noisy places.

So far, the AirPods work better for listening to TV. They also have a setting that focuses on the speech of someone who is directly in front of you. I haven't tried this setting yet, but it might work very well in restaurants.

  1. The Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are expected to be available fall 2024. The Hearing Aid feature is pending FDA authorization. Both features will be supported on AirPods Pro 2 with the latest firmware paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later and are intended for people 18 years old or older. The Hearing Aid feature will also be supported on a compatible Mac with macOS Sequoia and later. It is intended for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.

Worrying about something that hasn't been released, that may possibly never get approval, and may or may not be better than what you have seems like a waste of energy to me.

Sure, if they're connected to an Apple TV, they may be an improvement over your hearing aids. Live Listen is a useful, if somewhat limited, feature. The fact that it requires your iPhone means it's not suitable in all cases. And you're certainly not likely to get 24 hours out of that, either.
