To move a file, just drag it to the new location. To copy it in place, right-click or control-click on the file and select Duplicate. To copy a file to a new location, you can either right-click or control-click on the file, select Copy, and then Paste it to it's new location, or you can hold down the Command key while dragging the file to the place you want the copy to be.

When the source and destination are on the same Volume, the default is "MOVE", but this is implemented by adjusting the Directory entry, NOT by a replicate-and delete -- no blocks are copied. If you wish to modify that behavior, hold the Option key, and you should see a symbol, such as a green Plus sign, indicating that you will be Replicating rather than Moving.
When the source and destination are on Different volumes, the default is to Replicate. if you wish to MOVE, which WILL is this case be implemented by a Replicate followed by deleting the original, hold the Option key, and you should get a similar hint that something special will be happening. My recollection is that you get a plus sign, but I am not certain.
A favorite feature I use in Finder is to open a window of the source, then choose File > New Window.
An additional window appears, and can be dragged side by side, and you can navigate it a second location, such as a destination folder. When the presentation in each window is similar, such as list view, you can bring two folders up to date with each other by dragging and dropping items between them until they both agree, or have only a few expected differences.
