screen on MacBook air bought last year has gone dim

i have looked at settings appearance and toggled light screen appearance, no difference

One for macOS 12 for Monterey which is where this question appears


The other is for macOS 14 Sonoma which I believe this computer could be running ( MacBook Air (M2, 2022) )
