Is it normal for a newly bought MacBook Air to have a battery health of 97%?

Hello!

I just bought a MacBook Air M1. The battery charge level when I opened it it was below 10% so I use the charger to fully charge it. According to coconut battery the battery health is at 97% after a fully charge.

Do I have to send it to the repair shop? Is this normal?

Thank you in advance

97% is pretty normal for a new(ish) MacBook Air. In general it is not recommendable to charge to 100%. See: Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple

Just keep an eye on the battery health for the next week or so. If it stays at about 97%, it is fine. My two and a half year old M1 MacBook Air is at 88% now.

It varies from battery to battery, and depends on usage patterns. My work 16" M1 MBP is 2.5 years old, 128 cycles on the battery and the health is still great. I feel like I hit the lottery, that's definitely an outlier in my experience.

One important thing to note is that battery health declines are not linear. Ignoring the outlier of my work Mac, my other Mac laptops typically from an initial 97-105% health to about 90% over the first 12-18 months of use, then stay between 85-90% over the subsequent 5-6 years before beginning to decline again. That's pretty typical for LI-based batteries.
