After trying to find a clear answer from Apple, or anywhere else, it appears that (Apple) does not support Auracast. I hope someone will let me know if I am somehow mistaken. It seems bewildering that my iPhone cannot receive a local Auracast transmission that I can then hear on my Bluetooth AirPods.

Unfortunately you are not mistaken. Apple of course are doing great things driven to create market differentiation e.g. Vision Pro & the OTC Hearing aid feature coming to the AirPods Pro 2.. However if they are not careful they will be creating market differentiation by being late to the party with a must have feature. Auracast is not just easy access to shared audio, it will play a major part in transforming hearing accessibility in challenging environments - who ever understood an airport announcement?! Like AI, Auracast is a must have - the latest devices are BTLE v5.3 or greater and support it, but Apple have not enabled it yet… Hurry up, or you will lose sales!
