Preview App jumps back to the 1st page of PDFs (clarifying post)

I wanted to post this as a comment to previous questions, but those threads have been locked.

In short, as others have described (here and here), there are specific situations where Apple Preview will return to the first page of a document when the document is brought back into focus. Several people responded saying that they don't see that behavior.

Here's the missing detail: if you are generating or editing the document in a different app but using Preview to view it as a PDF (maybe other formats?), Preview will return to the first page every time the document is regenerated and brought back into focus (i.e., when you switch back to Preview).

I'll provide two examples to clarify:

  1. I often use Adobe products to create scientific figures for publication, but I submit the final product as a PDF document. I use Preview to view the final PDF.
  2. I create my resume / curriculum vitae (CV) using LaTeX. When I run `pdflatex` in the command line, it generates an updated PDF document. I use Preview to view the document. So, every time I run `pdflatex` and then switch back to view my CV in Preview, Preview returns to the first page of my CV. This is annoying because my CV is 30 pages and I'm often working on one of the later pages.

As a bonus bug, I cannot immediately return to the page I'm editing by clicking on the page's thumbnail in Preview's side bar. If I do, Preview will not return to that page unless I click on another page first.

To reproduce:

1. Open a multi-page document and move to a page beyond the first by clicking on that page's thumbnail in Preview's sidebar.

2. Edit the document using an external tool (e.g., recompiling a LaTeX document).

3. Return focus to the document's window in Preview (Preview will return to the first page of the document; problem #1).

4. Click on the same page you had previously navigated to in Preview's sidebar (it will not return that page; problem #2).

5. Click on any other page (Preview will navigate to that page).

6. Click on the page of interest (Preview will now navigate to the page of interest).

There is no solution to these two problems, but I wanted to at least clarify what's happening and why most people won't run into it.
