Lost all email in a Gmail account

All mail before Sept. 5 from one Gmail account disappeared - from all folders. What to do?

If you have a free gmail account, you are not Google's customer. You are the product they sell...


IMAP accounts synch all changes between the server and all of the clients. if something goes wrong on one, it effectively goes wrong on all of them.


If you're using Time Machine to backup your Mac, you can restore the ~/Library/Mail/ folder from a time when the messages still existed. That should restore your mail database to the state it was in when the backup was made.

Note that this will overwrite the existing database, including any message you do have in mail now.
